Granting bonuses to fast food employees is a recurring question, especially during a crisis. While mandatory in some cases, they are not mandatory in all cases when another solution is possible. But regardless of their respective amounts, they must also comply with certain rules. Here they are.
The annual contractual bonus (PAC) for fast food restaurants
⌛For full-time employees
The annual contractual bonus, called PAC in fast food jargon, is an essential benefit. Thus, employees who have worked for a year or more - and who are still working for the restaurant on the day the bonus is issued - benefit from regular annual bonuses, paid in a single payment.
The conventional annual bonus wasrevalued in 2021, starting from the 2nd seniority bracket:
- Seniority from 1 year to less than 3 years: €170
- From 3 years to less than 5 years: €220
- From 5 years to less than 10 years: €297
- From 10 years of seniority: €407
⏳For part-time employees in the restaurant industry and in other special situations
In certain circumstances, the amount of the bonus is calculated pro rata to the hours worked:
- Part-time employees (who are also entitled to the severance pay 👉see below)
- In the event of an unjustified absence of more than 3 days
- In the event of an absence from work of more than 10 days due to illness
- For a period of more than 10 days of unpaid leave
👕The laundry allowance
Workwear is a key issue in the fast food industry, particularly in certain restaurants that require a uniform. In this case, the cleaning costs always concern the employer. Depending on the restaurant, the outfits may be cleaned on site, sent to the laundry, or entrusted to the employee.
So that when the use of a specific model of workwear is mandatory and the cleaning is the employee's responsibility, the latter receives a laundry allowance or soiling allowance to reimburse their expenses. It is equal to 3.32% of the guaranteed minimum wage (MG), capped at 151.67 hours of work/year.
⏰The severance pay for part-time restaurant employees
Fast-food restaurant hours don't make life easier for part-time employees when the breaks are too long. Thus, when the break between two services is longer than 2 hours, part-time employees must receive a bonus called a "severance pay bonus".
For each break, it corresponds to 70% of the guaranteed minimum, without being less than €3. For each break of more than 2 hours, at least €3 must be added to the part-time employee's pay slip.
🍟The meal voucher/meal voucher
In some cases, fast food employeesdo not have the opportunity to eat on site due to their shift work. These are mainly those who prepare croissants and other pastries in the early morning and are responsible for baking bread. Employers must therefore grant a meal allowance, also known as a meal allowance.
In 2022, this allowance is exempt from social security contributions up to €6.80. For your information, in 2021, it was exempt from social security contributions up to €6.70.
👉Please note: if you choose to grant the meal allowance to your employees, it cannot be combined with other meal allowances, such as benefits in kind.
